The first weeks I spent in the world of North Eastern America were an eye opener for me to say the least. I had grown up in the Deep South, carefully protected by the society from the rudeness of men. When I met my first group of northern men in a social experience as a northern transplant I couldnt believe how they were behaving. The men up here can be rude and crass, and as a group they are not very kind or gentle at all. When girls meet my southern boy fianc, they all decide that the men are better in the south. They think that they want their men to act more like southern men. So, here is a southern girls guide to being like southern men.

When you are around girls, act as if you are around your own mother. One day they might be mothers, they deserve your respect. Keep your vulgar language and crude jokes until you know them better, or are with your man friends. Women might enjoy your sense of humor, but breaking that kind of humor out in mixed company is rude.

No matter how angry you are at a woman you need to keep it civil. If I see one more man getting into his wifes face and screaming at her, Im going to show him why southern men dont mess with a southern belle. The number one rule of being a southern man is to never raise your hand to a woman. If a man in southern society hits a woman, he becomes less than a man, because he wasnt acting like a man. Raising your voice in an aggressive manner and trying to intimidate her is just as bad as hitting her, and it is showing her no respect.
Respecting the women in your life is the key to being a southern gentleman. They open doors, carry packages, and spoil the women they love in little ways because they are glad that they have them. They respect the fact that that woman chose to love them and they realize what a gift that truly is. That is the difference between a southern gentleman and a Northern man.
